Sociology

The chair of Sociology at the University of Turku is the oldest one in Finland. It has been established in the year 1926. Traditionally, the research conducted within sociology has flourished in its versatility. The multitude of themes, strong methodological competence, and rigorous theoretical development have constructed the central traits of sociology at the University of Turku. The current research fields, which differ from a research project to another, relate to e.g. cultural sociology, environmental sociology, historical sociology, housing studies, multiculturalism and ethnicity, social capital, sociology of art, and sociology of science and technology.

Every year approximately 26 new students of sociology begin their M.A. in social sciences studies. The proportion of those graduating is high. The number of doctoral students is 30. Sociology is also a very popular minor subject across the faculty boundaries. The teaching staff includes two professors, university lecturer, university teacher and three doctoral student positions. Sociology belongs to the Faculty of Social Sciences.
