Studying at the Faculty of Social Sciences
Internationally renowned for research and education, the Faculty of Social Sciences offers a variety of degree programs for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Faculty of Social Sciences has about 1800 students studying for a degree. Undergraduate degrees offered by the Faculty include the Bachelor of Social Sciences degree, which is an undergratuate degree, and the Master of Social Sciences degree, which is a graduate degree. Postgraduate degrees include the Licenciate and Doctor of Social Sciences degrees.
Admissions
Admissions for the Faculty of Social Sciences are highly competitive. All Bachelor’s degrees are only given in Finnish, and the students are admitted via an entrance exam held at the end of each academic year. Approximately 10 % of the students applying to study for a Bachelor's degree at the Faculty are admitted yearly. Commonly the students admitted to the Bachelor’s degree are also eligible to continue their studies on the Master's level. The individual departments and master programmes are responsible for the student admissions.
Students holding a relevant Bachelor’s degree can in some cases be admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences to study for a Masters’s degree without an entrance exam. This route is highly competitive as well as the student is expected to have completed his Bachelor’s studies with good or excellent results.
Doctoral and post doctoral studies are also provided at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The students admitted to these studies are expected to have completed their previous studies with excellent results. The nature of studies at this level is very independent. The emphasis lies on the cooperation between the student and the supervisor and especially the individual effort of the student pursuing for the degree.
Facilities and Fees
Students admitted to the Faculty of Social Sciences follow their studies free of charge. The Faculty provides the students with library services of a very high quality and top level computer facilities.
